Driver in double fatal charged

THE driver, who killed two teenage hitch-hikers after crashing into them on New Year's Day near Wauchope has been charged by police.

The accident on the Oxley Highway, west of Port Macquarie, killed Kane Bramble, 19, of Port Macquarie and Clint Ritchie, 16 from Wauchope.

Police said the pair died on the roadway after they were struck by the passing Nissan Patrol about 12.35pm.

Mid North Coast police say the 37-year-old Byabarra man has now been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent occasioning death and low range drink driving.

He will face the Wauchope Local Court on April 12.
