Drunk and 'stupid' driver almost hits two police officers
A WOMAN driving while allegedly more than six times the legal alcohol limit has narrowly avoided ploughing into two police officers before crashing into a vehicle. Police have labelled the Maroochydore woman's alleged actions as "disgusting".
She registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.327% - the highest in recent memory on the Coast.
The 35-year-old was allegedly driving on the wrong side of David Low Way at Marcoola when she swerved to avoid a head-on collision about 150m from Runway Dr.
Police alleged the woman, who was already disqualified from holding a driver's licence, mounted a traffic island before slamming into another vehicle.
Two police officers were standing just metres away, talking to another driver on an unrelated matter.
They were quick to swoop on the woman, who allegedly could not string words together while being questioned.
Nambour Road Policing Unit acting officer in charge Dave Nelson said the woman put her driving behaviour down to prescription medication.
However, Snr Sgt Nelson said the alleged blood alcohol reading would indicate otherwise.
"The officers were in disbelief - they were shocked that people are still being so stupid on our roads," Snr Sgt Nelson said.
"We can't believe people are still prepared to not only put themselves in danger, but other people's lives in danger.
"She missed the head-on collision and swerved.
"She could have hit our officers who were standing outside of their vehicle."
Snr Sgt Nelson said a reading as high as 0.327% was not often seen by road policing officers.
"At 0.4% you are clinically dead - it's a very high reading," he said. "You have no control over a vehicle at that sort of reading.
"This situation could have been a whole lot worse."
The driver is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on November 24.
