Driver and car bashed with bar

ROAD rage reared its ugly head yesterday when a driver armed himself with an iron bar and lashed out at another man and his car.

Witnesses to the 8.50am incident on the Pacific Highway near Hoys Road at Moonee were stunned by the ferocity of the attack.

“This guy was heading south in a blue Falcon sedan and I saw him go into the passing lane and merge into the single lane up ahead,” one motorist said.

“I saw his car and a red Daihatsu pull off to the side of the road erratically.

“Then, I saw the man get out of his Falcon and he got a large green metal bar from the back seat and carried it by his side, shielding it from view.

“He went up to the other car and smashed the side of it repeatedly, and then smashed the driver's side window.

“He then attacked the driver, who was still behind the wheel, by thrusting the bar through the window. The man with the bar returned to his car and took off.

“The other driver stayed in his car until passing police were flagged down and came to his assistance.”

Police said the driver who was attacked, a Corindi Beach man, 27, was treated at hospital for fractures and bruising. He had a female passenger, 22, from Mullaway, and an empty baby capsule in the rear.

His assailant also had a female passenger and his car had South Australian number plates.

Police arrested a man and woman over the incident late yesterday at Woolgoolga.

They were last night helping investigators with their inquiries.
