Celebration for Dancesport champs

DAVID and Irena Brooks are one of Coffs Harbour's favourite ballroom dancing couples.

Recently the top duo was in Sydney to compete in the 2010 South Pacific Dancesport Championships at Darling Harbour's Bayside Convention Centre.

David and Irena won the Open New Vogue section and also managed third in the Open Modern section and second place in the combined Masters Eight Dance, finishing behind New Zealand. This was especially pleasing as the Eight Dance is a combined event in which David and Irena were up against much younger competitors.

The competition was held over a weekend with more than 450 couples competing. Couples from all over Australia and overseas competed to be crowned South Pacific Dancesport champions.

“We are very happy with our performances over the weekend and in getting the placing we did,” David said.

“This competition saw the very best of Australian and New Zealand dancers competing. The talent on show over the two days was awesome.”

Irena added: “It was very much a double celebration for us; not only did we win the Masters 2 Open New Vogue and perform extremely well in the other events, but we also celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary on the same weekend.”

These results place David and Irena in a good position for later in the year when the Australian Dancesport Championships will be held in Melbourne at the Hisence Arena in December.
