Woman killed in freak car accident
A FREAK fatal accident in the heart of Dorrigo has cast a pall over the small and close-knit town.
A 31-year-old local woman was killed on Saturday night when the maroon Hyundai Excel she was driving was hit from behind by a Nissan Skyline sedan. The driver of that vehicle, a 23-year-old man also from Dorrigo, is recovering with chest injuries.
Police say the accident happened at 11.50pm on Saturday night just outside the Heritage Dorrigo Hotel. It is believed the woman had turned into Cudgery Street (also known as the Waterfall Way) after driving east along Hickory Street.
Police said the Excel was allegedly stationary and she was about to start to reverse when her car was hit from behind by the Skyline.
According to those at the accident scene, the impact of the collision forced the rear into the front of the Excel.
The woman was crushed and died of her injuries before paramedics could free her from the wreckage.
She was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The Skyline was also extensively damaged.
The driver, who was also the only occupant of his vehicle, was taken by ambulance to Coffs Harbour with chest injuries.
Police said among witnesses within the Dorrigo Hotel at the time were family and friends of the woman.
No-one at the hotel was yesterday prepared to make any comment about what they saw.
The accident scene was immediately cordoned off as police began trying to piece together what had happened.
Waterfall Way was re-opened around 7am yesterday morning.
Officers from the Accident Investigation Unit were at the scene yesterday and are now preparing a report for the coroner.
Late yesterday they were still waiting to speak to the driver of the Skyline.
