Doctors thought abused children had 'accidental' injuries

AN explosive report into the deaths of abused and neglected children in NSW has revealed disturbing cases where doctors dismissed injuries as accidental and vulnerable kids died under the watch of child safety officers.

The review by the acting NSW ombudsman revealed three children died while subject to child protection matters, with Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) caseworkers assigned to their families.

Before the children died, FACS received reports of concerns the children's physical safety was at risk or they had been harmed.

"Specific reported concerns included suspicious bruising and physical injury, and carer homicidal ideation," the report said.

"In each of these three cases, the nature of the family's child protection history was relevant to the circumstances of the child's death."
