Doctors: sign hwy petition

DOCTORS around the Coffs Coast are urging local residents to hurry up and sign the petition calling on the State Government to take action on the Pacific Highway.

Launched by the new medical lobby group, Doctors for a Safe Pacific Highway, the petition is available at doctors’ surgeries, pathology laboratories, The Coffs Coast Advocate office and some pharmacies.

Petition forms must be returned to the Mid North Coast Division of General Practice in Coffs Harbour on Monday so they can be collated and given to Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser for presentation to parliament on Thursday before State Parliament rises for the Christmas recess.

The chairperson of the Division, Dr Harriet Playle, said she had asked members of the Pacific Highway Facebook sites to sign the petition as well.

The NSW Business Chamber has a Pacific Highway Facebook campaign and there is now a new group: The Pacific Highway Between Nambucca and Coffs is Claiming Too Many Lives.

Dr Playle said Doctors for a Safe Pacific Highway now had more than 60 members, both GPs and specialists, and was arousing a lot of interest.

“We are working out a plan of attack,” Dr Playle said.

“Our next project is bumper stickers and these have already been ordered.

“We will have three to choose from – End the highway to hell; Fix the highway now and Stop the carnage: fix the highway.”
