Doctors attracted to Coffs Coast

SIX doctors have joined practices in Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Woolgoolga and Grafton as part of the 2011 intake of 34 new GP registrars in the North Coast region, 10 more than last year.

Three of the new doctors are in Coffs Harbour, with one each in Bellingen, Woolgoolga and Grafton.

Among them is Dr Alayne Simon, who has moved to the Coffs Coast with her husband and two small children to take up a position at the Coffs Medical Centre and is now living in Bellingen.

Dr Simon said she and her family ‘fell in love with the area’ when they came up from Sydney. We are a bit outdoorsy and we like to get out in the bush,” she said.

Dr Simon and her husband spent nine years working in Sydney and then moved to Darwin for Dr Simon to spend a term working with district medical officers.

This involved flying from Darwin to provide medical services to indigenous communities, which she said was an incredible experience.

She says she and her husband, who works in real estate, are lucky they both have jobs which allow them to relocate but now they want to stay put and enjoy Bellingen.

Also among them is Dr Neelam Dhabuwala, who has taken up a position at Northside Health, which has now moved to Edgar Street from its original location in Park Beach Road.

Dr Neelam said she surveyed many regional areas before choosing Coffs Harbour, not just for its natural beauty but because she was confident her son, now in Year 4, would get a good education and have plenty of other activities available in the city.

She said she had also received very positive reports about the training provided by North Coast GP Training and the relaxed family lifestyle.
