Developer won’t give up on site

DEVELOPER Buildev is still pursuing a plan to build a supermarket on the Raj Mahal site in Woolgoolga.

“Buildev has an agreement with Coles to come to town if we can get an approval for that site,” said spokesman Mark Daniels.

He said the company had looked at other sites in Woolgoolga but found the Raj Mahal was the only place that has enough land to accommodate a supermarket, has convenient access and is a flat site.

“We are hoping that the council will look at that site and think the Raj Mahal will be the preferred site for a supermarket and we hope the draft Employment Lands Strategy gives Buildev the opportunity to make further representation to council for a supermarket,” he added.

“We would want to build it as quickly as we could, we are still keen and we are still working with Coles and they are still keen to come. (But) if it doesn’t come to fruition Coles and Buildev would reluctantly have to walk away.”

Buildev has tried twice to develop the Raj Mahal site.

In 2001, it pushed for Target and specialty stores to accommodate the site and in 2007 a stand alone Coles supermarket was proposed.

Presently the site is zoned for tourism and will have to be rezoned to allow for retail development.
