Desperate times looms for Miriam Vale Magpies to have a team

RUGBY LEAGUE: A Miriam Vale Magpies' life-member is pleading for more players to join the club in the next few days.

Glenn Cox, who has played for the Northern Districts Rugby League club for 15 years, said he does not want to don the boots again.

Instead, the club's current longest-serving player wants to watch the young guns do what they do best.

But this may not happen at all as a February 28 deadline looms.

"We have been training once a week with a core side and the young players who have been training," Cox said.

"But at this stage it's touch and go as to whether we can commit to have a side and we need a few more definites."

Cox said the ultimate decision would be up to the playing group who has been training.

"The coach Mitch Brennan, who is in our committee, will make a decision in the next few days as to whether we are going to field a side or for the first time since 2000, not actually put a side in the NDRL," he said.

Miriam Vale Magpies and Agnes Water Marlins have merged as the Northern Force.

The two clubs remained as separate entities last season.

This was designed to get both teams back on their feet again for this season.

"We've got shift-workers and mostly can't attend every weekend and we have probably got around 10 to a dozen players," Cox said.

To cover for those who are not available on match days, Cox said 20 players was the magical number for a team to be sustainable.

"An extra 5-10 players will certainly make a huge difference," he said.

Cox said Brennan, who was the assistant coach at the Force last season, made training fun and that he hoped this fact would attract new players.

"We are a great family club and have been for a long time. The kids are welcome to come along," he said.

If it comes to the crunch, Cox will play again for his beloved Magpies.

"If we do get a side and we're struggling for numbers, then I'll come off the bench," he said.

"But it's not about me, it's about the club."
