Demons’ star draft pick set to miss season

LIGHTNING has struck twice at Melbourne with prized No.2 draft pick Christian Petracca to miss the 2015 season after rupturing his ACL at training.

The Demons are still waiting for highly rated young forward Jesse Hogan, taken with pick No.2 in the 2012 mini-draft, to make his debut after a succession of back-related problems.

Petracca, a talented basketball player who eventually chose football and was considered a strong chance to be taken as the top draft pick by St Kilda last year, had scans yesterday after twisting his knee at training.

Manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said it was "devastating" news.

Petracca (pictured) was due to meet surgeons last night to discuss the appropriate surgery, with a traditional operation considered the most likely strategy.

The 19-year-old midfielder was the standout player a last year's national under-18 championships.
