Demons defender ruled out for season

AFL: A ruptured hamstring and not concussion will keep Melbourne defender Meg Downie out for the rest of the AFL Women's season, the club has confirmed.

Downie was hospitalised after being knocked out by Collingwood forward Sophie Casey's late hit, which earned the Magpie a two-match ban.

The Demons' women's football operations manager Debbie Lee said the club initially thought Downie was just affected by the concussion when she complained to medical staff about the hamstring injury.

But Lee explained that the player damaged the hamstring just before the collision with Casey.

"The medical team thought she was still concussed when talking about it, but Meg was quite right," Lee said.

"We got an MRI scan on Monday and unfortunately the results weren't what we were hoping."

The Demons will also be without Stephanie De Bortoli for the remainder of the season after she needed surgery on a damaged achilles tendon.

There are also injury problems for Fremantle, with Brianna Green a long-term casualty after breaking her collarbone in the defeat to the Lions at Fremantle Oval.

Green is waiting on news from a surgeon on whether she requires an operation.

International javelin thrower Kim Mickle's season is also over after scans revealed she had ruptured her ACL.
