Dementia program needs volunteers

THE call has gone out for helpers to join a new dementia volunteer program at Coffs Harbour hospital.

The program, which starts within weeks, aims to improve the quality of life for patients with dementia in hospital.

Successful volunteer applicants will be provided with training and ongoing support and will become valued members of an enthusiastic volunteer team.

“Volunteers will enhance their existing skills and knowledge and gain personal satisfaction from the work,” a spokesman said.

“The implementation is being jointly managed by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and the Mid North Coast Local Health Network.

“Similar programs run in other areas have shown that older people in hospital who are experiencing dementia or other memory problems show improved outcomes when supported by a volunteer.

“Volunteers are able to provide one-on-one support and engagement in activities, which assists those patients to feel more relaxed.”

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact the Dementia and Memory Community Centre at Port Macquarie on 1300 791 751.
