Decision time for the dam arrives

FEDERAL environment minister Peter Garrett has indicated he will come to a decision on the fate of the Traveston Crossing dam in the next week.

The controversial $1.8 billion project was approved last month by Queensland’s coordinator general, subject to 1200 conditions.

Whether or not it gets built is up to Mr Garrett, pictured, who has until November 18 to make a decision.

“I will make a proposed decision over the next week,” he told Network Ten yesterday.

“In doing that I will take account not only of what the department brings forward to me, but of the expert scientific advice and of the public submissions themselves.”

Mr Garrett said he would also release a statement, outlining how he came to his decision on the dam, publicly.

“The statement of reasons will include references to those matters which I considered, which came through as part of my departmental advice,” he said.

Opponents of the dam say today’s resumption of the Paradise Dam court case should serve as a reminder of the promises broken last time a major dam was approved by the state government.

The state government-owned utility, Sunwater, is being challenged by conservationists over its failure to meet a federal-government condition that it provides a fishway suitable for lungfish at the dam on the Burnett River, 35km north-west of Biggenden.

Is this a hard decision for Peter Garrett? What do you think the outcome of his decision will be? What should it be? Leave your comments below...
