Dean delivers after full-time to take side to grand final
RUGBY UNION: For those who witnessed the C-grade preliminary final on Saturday between Dalby and Goondiwindi, they'll remember it for one thing: grit.
Neither side gave an inch defensively, as the score finished 0-0 at the full-time siren.
As extra time got under way, the heavens opened up and ball handling became an issue.
As time ticked away the Wheatmen were awarded a penalty in front of the posts 20m out. Enter Sam Dean.
The energetic halfback stepped up to nail the penalty kick, handing the Wheatmen a 3-0 lead.
"I was confident I could knock it over,” Dean said of the penalty.
The Wheatmen would go on to defend their line desperately in the final minutes of extra time, as the Emus launched raid after raid.
"It was a nervous few minutes,” Dean said.
"Credit to the forwards for being able to hold Goondiwindi out.
"We were over the moon when the whistle went, it's always good to get through to the big dance. All of the boys were stoked.”
The Wheatmen's partner in the big dance are minor premiers the Chinchilla River Rats, but Dean is confident his side can get the job done.
The C-grade grand final kicks off at 11.15am.
