Aussie dad loses fight for life in Bali

DARWIN father-of-five Peter Wood, who spent nearly six weeks on life support in Bali after having a stroke while holidaying on the Indonesian island, has died.

In a public post on the family's GoFundMe page, Peter's son Damian Wood said his father passed away Wednesday morning.

"He fought the stroke and consequence of secondary fluid build up involving two brain surgeries, three recurring sets of infection, then pneumonia, and finally, increasing lung failure leading to artificial ventilation," Mr Wood Jnr said.

"All through this, while the rest of his body was being continually wrecked, he fought like a lion."

Mr Wood Sr was travelling alone when he had a haemorrhagic stroke - a burst blood vessel and bleeding of the brain.

Mr Wood Jnr said the family had been quoted about $60,000 for an emergency evacuation from Bali to Darwin, and had already racked up about $20,000 in hospital costs keeping their dad alive.

The family launched a GoFundMe to help raise money.

Unfortunately, Mr Wood Snr never made it home to the Territory.

"The doctors told me many times recently, they were amazed at the strength and resilience of his heart throughout this, especially at his age," Mr Wood Jnr said.

"He was a determined and a very strong man. He never gave up on anything."

Mr Wood Jnr said the family had considered turning his dad off life support before he passed.

"He had suffered enough of his reliance on others during this. Something we all know he wouldn't have liked," he said.

"We all knew this was the only option to respect and preserve his honour."

Mr Wood Sr died in his son's arms.

"Looking into his fading eyes, I knew this was him protecting us once more," Mr Wood Jnr said

"The man who loved us so much to let us decide and carry the burden."

The GoFundMe page is still accepting donations to cover Mr Wood Sr's medical bills and say goodbye to the much-loved Darwin dad.

"I have, and I know my dad has felt your prayers filling us with love and promise everyday," Mr Wood Jnr said.

"And to all those who didn't even know my father, at home and abroad, your donations and wishes were a reminder to me of all that is good in this world."
