Single mother pays $1000 after throwing dance floor punch

PUNCHING a woman in the face at Maryborough's Criterion Hotel has earned a 20-year-old single mother a hefty fine.

Sherelle Ann O'Donnell pleaded guilty to one charge of assault occasioning bodily harm in Maryborough Magistrates Court.

Police prosecutor Kath Stagnoll said the incident happened in the early hours of the morning after the women bumped into each other on the dance floor.

The women had then exchanged words and O'Donnell lashed out, punching the victim in the face and causing her to fall to the ground.

The victim suffered some bruising to the face as a result of the incident.

The court heard O'Donnell was a single mother to an 11-month-old boy.

The night out had been a one-off, the court heard, as O'Donnell usually stayed home with her son.

That night she had attended a sporting banquet and had then gone out with friends.

O'Donnell had been regularly employed up until the birth of her son and she would soon be seeking to rejoin the workforce.

The court heard there had been antagonism between the two women all night, which had led to the assault.

O'Donnell was fined $750 and ordered to pay $250 compensation to the victim.
