Cycle team wins memorial bronze

WHEN it comes to road cycling there’s no doubt that the Coffs Coast’s best are able to take on all the city slickers have to offer and beat them.

Coffs Harbour’s McDonalds/NAB/Rainbow Cycles Road Cycling team travelled to Grafton to participate in the Maurie Kautto Memorial teams’ time trial event, where they were expected to be competitive against strong teams that hailed from the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

The Coffs Harbour based team consisting of Daniel Alcock, Nathan Chiswell, Erin Rogers, Aaron O’Grady and Reece Edwards finished a respectable third place overall in a time of two hours, 24 minutes and 22 seconds over the 100-kilometre course.

That meant that the five-man team recorded an average speed of 43.2km/h.

Alcock and O’Grady pushed the team on the flats with hill specialist Rogers riding a quick tempo over the hills.

The fact that Chiswell raced strongly following a four week spell from riding helped the team’s performance no end.

The next event for the Coffs Harbour Cycle Club members is the Keegan Downes Memorial Sundowner Handicap from Coonabarabran to Gunnedah followed the next day by a State road race.
