Cursed by the penalty points

COFFS Crushers are cursing the decision to turn their backs on possible penalty points after going down narrowly to Hastings Valley at Lake Cathie Rugby Field on Saturday.

After kicking ahead 12-0, Crushers received a number of penalties within kicking range but instead decided to run the ball. But the Vikings finished strongly with two second half tries and despite missing with both conversion attempts, it was ironic Grant Popplewell managed to win the match by the barest margin with a penalty.

Meanwhile, Coffs Breakers opened their 2009 campaign by receiving a forfeit from Port Pirates B.

SCOREBOARD: Hastings Valley Vikings 13 (Nick Ward, Grant Popplewell tries; Grant Popplewell penalty) def Coffs Crushers 12 (Will Guest 2 tries; Richard Officer conversion). Coffs Breakers received forfeit from Port Pirates B.
