THE Brisbane Broncos is a club which isn't just about rugby league the club also sponsors netball on the Southern Downs.
For a decade or more, the Broncos have sponsored travel and trophies for Year 8-10 competitions in rugby league and netball.
Each school contests the round games and there is one afternoon of finals at Collegians and Eastern Suburbs junior rugby league grounds and at netball headquarters, Barnes Park.
This year, the first three rounds have been played between secondary schools at Allora, Killarney, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Texas, Inglewood and Goondiwindi and two private schools – Assumption College and St Joseph's.
Small schools combine to form teams, such as Allora and Killarney state schools.
Allora/Killarney A-grade rugby league team is unbeaten, with Warwick State High going well in B grade.
Assumption beat Allora/Killarney 26-12 in B grade on Wednesday.
In netball, Assumption College recorded a C-grade win against Allora and beat Killarney in B grade. The A-grade netball will be played when school resumes.
Competition organiser PJ Hirche said the finals would be on June 1.
“We hope to have Paul Dyer and Broncos players at the finals,” Hirche said.
Darren Lockyer is among Broncos players who have attended the finals, met players and presented trophies in past years.
