Crook gets wet & wild

IT WAS a smash and grab mission with a touch of comedy capers.

A desperate thief, who must still be thawing out today, ripped a pipe from the grounds of Coffs Harbour Fire Station and used it to smash the front glass door of a car audio retailer across the road.

The broken high-pressure pipe would have soaked the crook who also managed to trigger the store's alarm at 2.23am.

Dripping wet and with time against him as the owner of Gem Car Sound and Auto Electrics was racing toward his shop - while the firemen were still none the wiser about the massive geyser out the front - the thief persisted and managed to grab only a sub-woofer speaker set for his wayward efforts.

“I walked inside and couldn't believe that's all that was taken,” store owner Glenn Colquhoun said.

“The worst is the mess. The glass was scattered across the whole floor. He would have been in and out in a hurry.”

Forensics police were at the business mid-morning to gather evidence they hope will catch the crook.

The robbery was an uncomfortable reminder for Mr Colquhoun of the night four years ago when his Little Street shop was ram-raided. Since then, he's beefed up his security.

Back at the fire station, the gushing water was so powerful it peeled the paint from eaves at the front of the building.

Thankfully, some of the firefighters were also plumbers and managed to eventually stem the tide; a fitting end to an offbeat crime.
