‘Cowper Counts’ is Arkan’s motto in election campaign
AFTER months of speculation, John Arkan has announced he's running as a candidate in the upcoming Federal Election.
The Coffs Harbour councillor today threw down his gauntlet - confirming he will run as an Independent in the federal division of Cowper.
He said the driving factor of his campaign would be making Cowper a more marginal seat - summed up by his election motto: "Cowper Counts".
"The polls are very close and it's the safe seats in regional areas that miss out on the funding we need for health, education and other areas," Mr Arkan said.
"Making Cowper marginal would benefit everybody in the community. If I can achieve that then I've done my job as a citizen."
Mr Arkan previously ran as an independent in 2010 - securing 9.92% of the vote.
He has also ran as a Liberal candidate in mayoral elections in 2008 and 2012, but denied he'd fallen out with the party.
Today's decision follows speculation Mr Arkan - a Woolgoolga resident - would run in Page, the federal division where he lives and runs a business.
Questioned if he would still serve as councillor if elected on July 4 he replied, "let's see what happens"
He said he would release more details of his campaign in coming days.
