Coutts wins silver

AUSTRALIAN Alicia Coutts has claimed silver behind China's Shiwen Ye in the women's 200 metre individual medley.

The field could hardly be spit for the first three laps, but once they turned for home, it became a personal battle between Coutts and Ye.

But Ye was too strong in the final freestyle leg, pulling away from the Australian with every stroke to claim a well deserved victory.

However, Coutts said her final time of 2:08.15, a personal best, was all she could muster against the Chinese phenomenon.

"I'm really happy with that swim," Coutts said.

"I went out there and swam my race.

"But I had to grit my teeth and put my head down (in the last 50 metres)."

Caitlin Leverenz of the United States finished third while Coutts' teammate Stephanie Rice finished outside the medal placings in fourth position.
