Country kid lends a hand

KNOWING first hand how hard it is for a ‘country kid’ to move to the big smoke for university, Chris O’Brien is now helping others.

The junior partner at Fishburn Watson and O’Brien Law Firm, Mr O’Brien enjoys being able to use his position to help students now.

“It was pretty hard as a country kid,” he said.

The local law firm hands out a $1500 scholarship to a budding lawyer. This year, they chose the first Bishop Druitt College student to receive it.

Billy McLean graduated last year and now lives in Sydney completing a double degree in law and business at the University of Technology Sydney.

“It’s such an honour to accept it,” Mr McLean said.

Home this week after completing his first round of university exams, the teenager couldn’t stop smiling at a presentation ceremony at his old high school yesterday.

Mr McLean said the money will be used to buy text books.
