Countdown is on for new skate plaza's opening

THE countdown is well and truly on to next weekend's official opening of the Coffs Harbour Skate Plaza at Brelsford Park.

Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Denise Knight, wants the whole community to join in the fun on on Saturday, July 26 to celebrate this eagerly-awaited and fantastic new attraction for the City.

Cr Knight will officially open the Plaza at noon with a ribbon-cutting, which will be immediately followed by demonstrations by expert BMX and Skate Riders.

All skaters and riders can then join in to experience and enjoy the brand new space.

Local youth radio station CHY-FM has also organised a FREE mini music festival with heaps of local bands performing from noon to 4pm to add to the celebrations.

"I couldn't be happier to see the Skate Plaza finally open. We have waited so long to have this wonderful attraction, not just for the youth of Coffs Harbour, but as a drawcard for the whole region," Cr Knight said.

"The contractors and Council staff involved have worked so hard to get this completed I can't thank them enough, so join me at the opening to celebrate yet another major milestone achieved by our wonderful community."

The final touches are currently being put in place ahead of the opening.

The custom-made shade structure and barbecue shelters, which were designed by Coffs Harbour architects g2 Architects, are being installed by local business Arc Attack Engineering.

Water-inspired laser-cut roof designs on the shelters were created from workshops held with Orara High and Jetty High students to give the Plaza a unique 'Coffs Coast feel'.

These themes are also incorporated into the safety railings, which are due to be installed next week.

"It is these additional touches which will make this space more than just a skate park, but a vibrant new space for the whole Coffs Harbour community," the Mayor said.
