Countdown to Coffs Cup

THE countdown has begun to Coffs Harbour's biggest social and sporting event.

Two days of fun and serious racing activity will thrill the city when the annual VB Gold Cup Carnival is completed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Racing Club CEO Russ Atkinson said in addition to $238,000 in prize money being pumped back into the industry, it's a great time for racing identities to get together to catch up and unwind.

“Tomorrow's annual golf day at Bonville is organised by Brett Bellamy and is always a fantastic day out,” he said.

“Brett still has a few places left so give him or Bonville a call.

“And for those who like to wet a line, why not catch up with Gordon Yorke, who's organised a fishing charter.”

Wednesday morning features the Westlawn Sportsmans Breakfast from 7.00am with guest speakers including recently retired race caller Ian Craig, football legend Gordon Tallis, TV personality Scott Cam and local rally champion Nathan Quinn.

Gates open at 11.00am on Thursday for VB Gold Cup day and the first race will be at 12.42pm. The feature event will be run at 4.16pm.

Thursday's program is very strong and the big guns are coming out for the Daniel Baker Memorial Sprint and the VB Gold Cup. Gordon Yorke's Nuclear Medicine, Con Karakatsanis's Come in Spanner, Trevor Hardy's Fair Game just to name a few will vie for the $35,000 race.

While in the Cup, local favourite Fiori, who won the Sawtell Cup last week, will battle 2006 winner Mr Goldfire, 2007 winner Derivative Receipt, Ken Lantry's Legendary Man, Frank Gardner's Lockmar and Trevor Hardy's Save a Buck and a host of other great chances to claim the $70,000 race.
