Councillor, MP join forces to meet Oakhurst residents

MARYBOROUGH MP Anne Maddern and Fraser Coast councillor James Hansen teamed up for a community barbecue for voters in Oakhurst, with rates, roads and healthcare the major issue raised by residents.

In a joint statement, Mrs Maddern and Mr Hansen said Maryborough Hospital, state-owned roads, the recent rate rise and the controversial sport precinct had the largest responses from voters.

Cr Hansen said the barbecue cemented his opposition to the council's planned sports precinct, which is set to cost $54 million over the next two decades.

He said there was an overwhelming response from people at the barbecue to sign a petition to reverse the decision.

Cr Hansen said he also understood concerns about a recent rates rise, which he had opposed.

Another community barbecue will be held in Tiaro on October 7.
