Dogs run free at Stuart Island
DOG lovers in Nambucca Heads now have a new place to let their best friends run free.
Nambucca Shire Council has decided to formally recognise part of Stuart Island as an official off-leash area.
Councillor Brian Finlayson argued that the northern section of Stuart Island area had long been an unofficial leash-free zone.
”There has been no evidence of any harm to anyone over the many years that people have been letting their dogs run free in that area,” Cr Finlayson said.
But Cr Paula Flack said she thought the area was possibly too popular with families and letting dogs run off the leash would pose a risk to children.
”Stuart Island is also a significant area for the local Gumbaynggirr people and I can’t support the proposal out of respect for them,” Cr Flack said.
Cr Janet Court was worried about the potential conflict between dogs and migratory birds in the inter-tidal zone.
“I would like to see a sign stating that dogs shouldn’t be allowed to run out of control and that council won’t accept them menacing birds or other wildlife,” Cr Court said.
The area will only be off-leash for dogs between 4pm and 9.30am.
