Annual report raises question in Chamber

COUNCILLOR Nan Cowling was the only councillor to vote against a motion to adopt the 2013-14 Annual Report for Coffs Harbour City Council and congratulate the general manager and staff on the report relating to the council's financial management.

Cr Cowling, who remains unhappy with the financial affairs of the council, put a series of detailed questions to the council's director of business services, Andrew Beswick, asking for yes/no answers only.

The council's general manager, Steve McGrath, said Cr Cowling had already been provided with the answers to her questions on investments, grants, depreciation, profit and purchases, but she said she wanted to provide the answers publicly for the benefit of members of the public in the gallery.

Mr Beswick said that just as Cr Cowling was entitled to ask the questions, he was entitled to answer them as he saw fit.

He provided explanations and qualifications for a number of his answers except for the question of whether there was an increase in overall staff numbers during the year, which he said he would have to take on notice.
