Council agrees with Cr Arkan

COUNCILLOR John Arkan this week received majority support from his fellow councillors for pushing Coffs Harbour City to support closer ties with overseas countries.

Cr Arkan wanted the council to agree to conducting a feasibility study to assess the establishment of ongoing enterprise and education with India.

What he achieved was a broadly worded motion that council look at the potential cost of a feasibility study on the establishment of an ongoing international initiative.

The final motion was supported by Crs Rodney Degens, Bill Palmer, Keith Rhoades, Paul Templeton and Mark Graham, but opposed by Crs Denise Knight, Kerry Hines and Jennifer Bonfield.

Concerns expressed by councillors included that such activity should be left to the Economic Development Unit and Coffs Harbour Education Campus and that the system would be abused and international students would be recruited as cheap labour.
