Comp to reel in anglers, boost community as dam levels drop

A SOUTH Burnett fishing committee is hoping to lure in more than just fish at its annual competition.

The Bjelke-Petersen Dam Inland Classic will be hosted at the dam from Friday, October 4 until Sunday, October 6.

After an impressive number of anglers at last year's competition, Bjelke-Petersen Dam Fish Management Committee president Bill Schloss said he hoped the competition would raise vital funds to support the future of fishing in the region.

"We have low water levels this year that are currently sitting at just over 5 per cent,” Mr Schloss said.

"It's a great way to promote the dam and the local area.

"All of the businesses benefit from having the comp here because the money also goes back into the district.”

To compensate for the lack of water in the dam, organisers are also hosting other events such as casting competitions for both the juniors and seniors, and a yabby race on the Saturday night.

Mr Schloss said hosting these events wouldn't be possible without the assistance of the council.

"It's fantastic to have the support from the South Burnett Regional Council,” he said.

"They donated money last year which helped us out a lot, and have done the same again this year.

"We couldn't do what we do without them.

"We brought it back last year, so now we are hoping for an even better turnout this year.”

Anglers at the event will be wetting a line, hoping to catch the great prizes up for grabs which include a Whitewater Marine boat and two Dragon Kayaks, which Mr Schloss said added up to more than $30,000 in value.

The family-orientated event will start at noon on Friday, October 4, when nominations will be taken for the junior and senior events.

The competition will feature a catch and release and a gutted and gilled section for their competitors.
