Community's generous giving is priceless

VOLUNTEER groups are the backbone of our community and there's nothing more heartwarming than when a local helps out another.

The Coffs Harbour Pacific City Lions Club is thanking the community for their donations to its latest fundraiser, which has resulted in numerous local volunteer organisations receiving $1000 each.

Cancer Council Northern NSW, Coffs Harbour SES, Coffs Harbour Men's Shed and Life Education were all granted the generous donations.

The Lions members were invited to undertake a bucket collection from the audience each night at Stardust Circus during its stint in Coffs Harbour in March.

"We're very thankful to the community, and now they can see that their donations have gone to very good causes," Pacific City Lions Club president Joe Grewal said.

Sue DiDonna from Life Education said the donation would help the organisation deliver its service, which aims to prepare children for life after primary schools in regards to health, education and the internet.

"This donation means a lot to Life Education. We're always in need of donations and we desperately need more volunteers for our committee," she said.

Kevin Gibson from Coffs Harbour SES said the donation meant the unit could finally have access to lockers.

"The money will be really handy, because for a long time we've been short on lockers in the unit. Being able to purchase more lockers means the crew will be able to leave their gear at the unit and can go straight out to an emergency as soon as they can."

Coffs Harbour Pacific City Lionesses Club members also gathered donations at the circus, raising an estimated $500 for Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

"We chose Westpac Rescue Helicopter because they provide such a vital service to our community," said club president Robin Lawrence.
