Community urged to help elderly
RELATIVES and friends of elderly and vulnerable people, who were affected by the March 31 storm, are being urged to contact them over the holidays to check that they are not in any need.
“Many people - particularly the elderly - don't like to make a fuss and may not have indicated the full picture to their families or friends,” said Bellingen Shire Mayor, Councillor Mark Troy, who chairs the committee jointly with Coffs Harbour City Council Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades.
“It may be the case that they are still in need of help to remove wet items or fittings from their homes or are without basic household items. They may also be able to access extra support services that are now available through the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care such as Meals on Wheels and Home Care,” he said.
The Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC) has increased its local services capacity as a result of the March 31 storm.
Information on the DADHC services, as well as help and advice for anyone affected by the March 31 storm is available from the three Recovery Centres set up by the Coffs Coast Recovery Committee.
The Primary Flood Recovery Centre is located at 5 Gordon Street, Coffs Harbour.
A second Recovery Centre is also available at 15 Bowra Street, Urunga. To contact the Recovery Centres call 02 6648 4111.
Each centre is open 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and has representatives of key welfare agencies on hand, or via referral from the sites, to give help, advice and information.
