Community rallies together for home reno

LOOKING around at her near-complete house renovations, Judy Mison can barely recognise her old Safety Beach home.

"It's beautiful. I just think its overwhelming to have all this done for me, I just can't believe it," she said.

Judy's friend and retired builder Steve Brown has headed the home renovations with the help of various community members and businesses who together donated their time and supplies to breathe new life into the home.

Six new doors and carpeting, repairing the leaking roof as well as a fresh lick of paint are highlights of the home's facelift.

The move to renovate the house began about three weeks ago when Judy was receiving cancer treatment.

Talking to her friend Rosie, Steve's wife Judy expressed her concern about the ailing condition of her humble abode.

Once Rosie told Steve about Judy's situation there was no stopping the retired builder from getting his tool kit out to begin repairs.

On top of her cancer treatment, Judy was previously looking after her grandson during adversity with drug addiction. Recently, he took his own life.

Punched in walls and damage around the house reflected the hardship of the situation for Judy and her family, Steve said.

With the work scheduled to be completed next week, Steve said he can see it's made a positive difference to Judy.

"Just getting her to smile again was pretty amazing."

The retired builder hopes the renovations will inspire people to give a helping hand to a friend in need.

Steve's work has inspired Real Estate Rescue, an initiative by The Edge Real Estate, to help a family in dire need with some help around the house.

The community response to support initiative -the recipient to be announced coming weeks - has taken The Edge principal Jason Burnett aback.

"We're getting lots of contractors and suppliers and businesses wanting to get behind the event." he said.
