Community mourns loss of father and daughter in crash
A COMBINATION of speeding and distracted driving may have been the cause of a crash that took the life of a 50-year-old man and his young daughter.
Grandchester dad Bradley Smith was driving along Rosewood-Laidley Rd about 4pm on Friday when his vehicle suddenly veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
Mr Smith died instantly.
His 12-year-old daughter, Ebonnie, was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital to be treated for critical injuries but died the following night.
The girl is believed to have been a Year 7 student at Laidley State High School.
Laidley Police Senior Sergeant Jim McDonald said speeding and distracted driving may have been a factor in the fatal accident.
However he added that investigations were continuing and that the Forensic Crash Unit was looking into all possible causes of the crash.
Sen Sgt McDonald said the crash was one of the worst he'd seen.
"They (fatal crashes) are all bad but this one was horrific," he said.
"The family are distraught...they are beside themselves.
"This fatality is not just another statistic, it's a stark reminder of how fragile life can be."
Sen Sgt McDonald said the tragedy served as an important message for people to remain alert when behind the wheel.
"I used to say to my kids when they were driving, you have to remain vigilant.
"If you make one mistake it can cost yours or someone else's life," Sen Sgt McDonald said.
