MPs promise to ease community's fears at local park

INCREASED criminal activity at a park in Brightwater has sparked fears for safety among the community.

Neighbourhood Watch Area Coordinator and Brightwater Community Association secretary Allan Rankin said CCTV cameras could be strategically located around the estate as a deterrent to criminal and anti-social behaviour.

"Brightwater has experienced a spate of criminal activity and a growing pattern of youth anti-social behaviour in our parks and outdoor recreational spaces, including wilful damage, verbal abuse of residents and recently a physical assault," Mr Rankin said.

"As well as acting as a deterrent, CCTV cameras would be an invaluable asset in the identification of offenders."

Today the Federal Government announced a $75,000 commitment to purchase and install permanent CCTV cameras at Brightwater Lakeside Park if re-elected.

Member for Fairfax Ted O'Brien is working with the Brightwater community to determine how to best meet their needs.

"Extensive consultation within the community has identified a number of concerns local residents have around their safety as individuals and for families using the park on Freshwater St," he said.

"I have doorknocked many households around the area and spoken with both the community association and Neighbourhood Watch to hear first-hand about the problems being experienced, as well as the best possible solutions.

"So I am delighted to be able to announce this commitment from a re-elected Morrison Government to purchase and install a number of CCTV cameras for the Brightwater Park precinct."
