Coffs takes a shy at the stumps with bid to host Test cricket
INTERNATIONAL cricket matches could be added to the suite of sports hosted on the Coffs Coast, enhancing the region's growing reputation as a sporting event mecca.
Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has written to Cricket Australia chief executive officer James Sutherland requesting Coffs Harbour be considered as a venue for future cricket Test matches.
The action comes after media reports suggesting Hobart is in danger of losing its hosting rights.
Mr Hartsuyker said the possibility of hosting popular cricket Test matches was a great opportunity for the region's growth.
"Given the attributes that we have, we should put ourselves forward and get our name front of mind," he said.
Coffs Harbour hopefully could be considered for the Australia v Bangladesh match in August 2017 - the type of Test match that's been hosted in the past in regional areas like Cairns.
From the FIA World Rally Championship to the national Oztag titles, the Coffs Coast has a strong record of hosting premier sporting events.
Mr Hartsuyker said this record, combined with the upgrade of the C.ex Coffs International Stadium lights to meet digital broadcast standards, made him confident cricket events would flourish.
"I think it would be successful and it would be great to showcase our region on national and international television," he said.
