Coffs premiere for '40s musical

MANY of Coffs Harbour's best-known amateur performers have come together to put on Swingtime Canteen, which will have its Australian premiere at the Jetty Theatre on March 20.

Experienced director Pat Slattery and her cast take audiences back to the morale-boosting wartime performances of the 1940s, laced with lively trumpet solos and favourite tunes from a bygone era.

Among the cast are Chris Gooley, Sue Korner, Helen Sproule and Cheryl Duroux-Curry, who choreographs the sassy swing moves in this warm-hearted musical.

The songs are interwoven with the performers' stories - Katie, who harbours a secret relationship; Topeka, a mother who arrives on stage fresh from a factory riveting bench; the smouldering Lilly who climbed her way out of the chorus line the hard way, and Jo Sterling, forever in the shadow of her best friend Marian, a leading lady faced with the possibility of a dried-up career.

The CHAT Productions show features musical direction by Peter Kaukiainen who recreates the 1940s before a backdrop of patriotic red, white and blue.
