Island plans to replace septics

THERE has been an overwhelming response by Newry Island residents to Bellingen Shire Council’s initial letter outlining plans to sewer those island properties still using septic systems.

In the letter the cost of connecting to the proposed new infrastructure was estimated at $15,000 per property plus a $2300 one-off connection fee.

The council’s director of environment and planning, Charlie Hannavy, said close to 50 per cent of those 42 residents affected had responded.
