Coffs Harbour Rugby announces Team Of The 1990s
MANY will argue the Coffs Harbour Rugby Team of the 1990s is entitled to be known as the best of the four decades being celebrated in 2013.
Certainly, the backline would take tossing, headed by the most unlikely halfback of all time, Brendan Hoy.
Nobody has ever thrown a pass as accurate and as good as the chunky schemer and what a dangerous group outside him including Matt Bye, Australian Sevens Barbarian centre Greg Wilson and the always creative Dave Nicol who could call the shots with authority from any position on the field.
And as for that fiery pack including Reo Hita, Grant Murphy and Graham White ...
Team-1990 members are still contributing heavily to the local game.
Michael Tonks is in the eyes of many, the Mid North Coast zone's best referee and it's a shame he hasn't been appointed to a first grade grand final before this.
Dave Nicol's hair is somewhat greyer - if that is possible - since he took up coaching SCU Marlins - he even filled in at five-eighth when the side was short last year.
He's also making his mark as a junior coach, alongside Brendan Hoy.;
And while the former great half hasn't made it onto the park so far, if the Snappers start to stumble in the run to the semis, somebody is sure to suggest B Hoy in jumper 20 as a possible solution to their woes.
The best team from the 40 years of the modern era will be announced on the reunion weekend, June 7-9.
