Men's Shed a place for the guys
GARY Wallace is looking forward to joining his mate Tony Goninan at Coffs Harbour’s Men’s Shed mentoring budding woodworkers.
The pair have been mates for 20 years and now they spend a few days each week of their retirement out of the house.
“The Shed shows that retirement is more than sitting in front of the tele with your slippers on,” Mr Wallace said.
Their role is to impart wisdom, share skills and foster new ideas among the participants.
“I find the guys are very willing to learn which is encouraging to us as mentors,” Mr Wallace said.
Among a lifetime of projects, Mr Wallace’s favorite was fitting out a yacht using a combination of passion and self-taught skills.
The only formal training the former real estate agent has ever had was in a high school woodworking class – but he has all the qualifications needed by The Men’s Shed to be a mentor.
Peter Murphy, who manages the Coffs Harbour Men’s Shed, is looking for more mentors and participants.
“We’re after men who have a bit of experience working with timber,” Mr Murphy said.
