THE vast South American coastline of Chile is the centrepiece of an epic surf film to be screened in Coffs Harbour next week.

El Mar, Mi Alma - in English The Sea, My Soul - was made by Northern NSW film-makers including Chilean expat Tatiana Velasco and director Stephen Jones.

Combining the dramatic landscape, some of the world's best surfers including reigning world champion Joel Parkinson, together with music and poetry - the filmed has been quick to pick up awards and has secured mainstream cinema release through Hoyts in Chile itself.

Velasco said the work took inspiration from pioneering surf films as well as surfer Dave Rastovich's recent plan to return to the country and rediscover the surf which he experiences in 1995 Jack McCoy film Blue Horizon.

The film combines two of the most defining features of the Chilean psyche in poetry and the ocean that dominates its west coast.

Catch El Mar, Mi Alma at the Jetty Memorial Theatre on May 10 from 8pm.
