Coffs rugby stars recognised
CAREER prospects for Coffs Comets juniors Dan Killian and Caleb Gazzard are on an upward spiral after both were selected in the New South Wales Country under-16 team.
To be coached by Bellingen’s Maurie Hulbert, the junior Blues will take on Queensland Maroons in the annual interstate clash at Bundaberg on July 10.
Dan will be one of the prop forwards while Caleb has been selected to lock the scrum.
Apart from their club team remaining undefeated after seven rounds of the competition, Caleb and Dan were members of the Group 2 under-16 outfit which comprehensively downed Group Ten 32-18 last Saturday in Wyong to take out the CRL Trophy Final.
One day later the talented young players backed up for Northern NSW in the final game to earn selection.
“Dan and Caleb have great ability and potential to make it in rugby league,” club spokesperson Mark Thomas said.
“Apart from that all our boys are excelling across a range of codes and sports, with Lloyd Simms-Chambers who scored a try in the Trophy victory also being noted for his rugby union skills and earning state schoolboy selection in that code.
“Our representative teams are on a high this season, with rep footy putting extra polish on the kids and delivering many more opportunities.”
In coming weeks Group 2’s under-13 and 14 years sides will have the home ground advantage when the CRL Northern Cluster finals against Groups 1, 3 and 18 are played at BCU International Stadium on Saturday, July 3.
On August 8, the under-11 and 12 years development squads will travel to Tamworth for two matches.
