Coffs coffee connoisseur takes on the city slickers

WITH a fine local brew and colourful graffiti art emblazoned on the outside walls of its modern business fit-out, Artisti Coffee Roasters embodies Melbourne's quality coffee scene, in the heart of Coffs Harbour.

From filtered coffee to the much-loved regular espresso, former Melbournian and owner Luke Floyd wanted to replicate Melbourne's internationally renowned coffee scene to the Mid North Coast.

Luke's love of coffee was ignited at a cafe he owned in Sawtell four years ago where he managed front of house and his wife was the chef. Luke's passion for coffee saw the husband-wife team sell the cafe to establish the Artisti Coffee Roasters brand.

Since relocating to Vernon St 18 months ago, the business has excelled, with his then team of eight staff supplying 30kg of coffee, their six-month target, in just four weeks of opening.

"Initially there was just going to be a demo room down the front for our wholesale business and coffee only, and everyone kept saying they wanted more food, and every time we introduced more food we just kept growing," Luke said.

"Our training area rapidly became a dining area."

Fast forward to today and Artisti has a team of 18, a dining area and a kitchen operated by two chefs.

The coffee roaster-cafe combo has a reputation around town for being a meeting hub for local business owners and executives.

"You can come in, chill out at a big table and have business meeting with free WiFi. It's become their sort of second office," Luke said.

Luke and his team are ready to raise the bar again by "gearing to get outside the business" and onto the radars of interstate businesses at the Fine Food Australia Trade Show in Sydney in September, the largest in the southern hemisphere.

A highlight of Artisti's showcase will be the unveiling of their big new product, a collaboration with some high-profile people that's been two-and-a-half years in the making.

For right now, Luke is keeping mum on the details.

"Yes, we're a coffee roaster and we're going down for that to represent our products to get out and about outside the Coffs Harbour market and increase more jobs and things like that. But stay tuned because there is something more exciting happening for the show," he said.
