People's champion honoured ahead of Coffs Cup
TAKEOVER Target, the people's champion is immortalised as one of the greatest rags-to-riches stories in Australian turf racing and now he has his tribute in Coffs Harbour.
Trainer Joe Janiak this morning accepted a plaque from Coffs Harbour Mayor Denise Knight that will be hung in Takeover Target's honour at the Coffs Harbour Racing Club.
"It's just amazing how many people he touched right around the world," Janiak said.
One of Australia's truly inspirational racing stories, Janiak purchased Takeover Target as an unraced four-year-old for $1400 in Canberra.
Takeover Target retired as a household name in 2009 with 21 wins, eight at Group 1 level from 41 starts.
After many Australian sprint titles he enjoyed success in Japan, Singapore and Royal Ascot.
As Takeover Target's globe trotting feats were remembered one story retold was how Joe was offered $1 million for Takeover Target after he won Grafton's Ramornie Handicap in 2004.
With Takeover Target retiring in 2009 with career prize money of $6-million, it was acknowledged Joe made the right decision by his old mate 'Archie.'
