Coffs dancers win championship

IRENA and David Brooks returned home yesterday with broad grins and a hat-trick of championships.

The popular and dedicated Coffs Harbour ballroom dancers won the Masters 2 Open New Vogue Championship for the third year in a row at the Australian Dancesport Championships in Melbourne over the weekend.

“We are ecstatic and have grins from ear to ear,” Irena said

“Being National Champions three years running is something very special, and has exceeded all our expectations. ”

The win was another triumph of grit over adversity as Irena tore her calf muscle before they danced the final and was in a lot of pain.

“If not for the support of a doctor and lots of pain killers it may have ended right there,” she said.

But the judges obviously noticed nothing amiss, awarding them the top marks.

The couple also competed in the Open Modern section, performing dances such as the waltz, tango, foxtrot and quickstep and gained a creditable fifth place in that section.

The Australian Dancesport Championships this year saw some 680 couples from all over Australia and from around the world competing in this well-regarded international event.
