Coffee and cycling the ultimate combination
CYCLING: Combining cycling and coffee is a great way to start your weekend.
That's where Mackay Metro Bunch Riders come in.
The social club rides every Saturday, starting and finishing at Mackay Metro-Cafe on River St.
Member Ron Steel said originally there was another bike ride in town, however a number of women were being dropped from the pack along the way.
"So we started a ladies'-only ride ... the first ride (in October 2009), we had six ladies turn up and it just got bigger and bigger," he said.
"Then a few of the ladies asked if their husbands could come along and so the ladies' ride turned into a social ride. "Since then we've tried to keep the tone that it's not a race."
Steel said each Saturday morning four different groups covering different distances cycled throughout Mackay.
"The main idea is it's social riding, we're not affiliated with any groups, we just turn up and do our own thing," he said.
About 60 riders come each week but it can increase to more than 100 at times.
Club member Gregg Jones said the social aspect of the ride was one of the best parts of the club.
"After the ride we all finish at Metro and the place is just full of people catching up and having coffee," he said.
"There's always a sprint coming down the road (River St) to get their coffee first."
Steel, 57, has been cycling for about 30 years and said he really enjoyed the club.
"I just like the social aspect of it and meeting other people," he said.
"A lot of people that come to the rides meet other people and they'll organise other rides from it too."
Anyone is welcome to join the ride. Cyclists meet at Metro Cafe at 6.30am in winter and 6am in summer.
Taking part is free and information for upcoming rides is posted on the club's Facebook page.
