Cods, Uni in loser-leaves-town cup showdown
THE end of the 2019 Wagners Risdon Cup season will arrive for either Condamine or USQ when they meet at Gallas Fox Park this afternoon.
The Cods and Saints face a do-or-die scenario on Super Saturday I with the loser of today's knock-out clash finished for the year while the winner progresses to meet either Roma or Toowoomba Rangers in another elimination semi next Saturday at Goondiwindi.
Only one point separated Condamine and USQ on the premiership ladder at the end of the fixture year.
The narrow margin between the two teams was also borne out on the paddock with Condamine winning their first-round meeting 20-16 before Uni hit back in the second round to down the Cods 29-12.
Saints come into today's match after a final-round bye last weekend while Condamine went down 43-19 to Gatton in a match Uni coach Elisha Elisaia is dismissing as a pointer to today's pressure-cooker encounter.
"Condamine are a smart outfit. The are a strong team with a powerful pack,” Elisaia said.
"We both had wins over each other this season and this will be a tough, close game.”
Saints will be banking on seasoned rep players Angus Ramsey and Andre van Staden adding plenty of much-needed big-game experience to today's Uni line-up.
"We have a couple of players away and a couple out injured but we are close to full strength,” Elisaia said.
"We are only just starting to hit our straps after a mixed year where I thought we had the potential to finish in third spot but things didn't quite go our way.
"Angus and Andre have good finals' experience which we will be looking to tomorrow.
"It should be a great day at Roma, for the Roma club and Downs Rugby and we're looking forward to it.”
