ONE of the Coast's most well-known bearded men is taking his facial hair on an international journey to compete on the world stage.

President of the Bearded Men of the SC, Nathen Coles, will head to Austin, Texas in September to fulfil his long-time dream of competing at the World Beard and Moustache Championships.

The group's fourth annual Beard and Moustache Competition, taking place at the Palmwoods Hotel this Saturday, will help raise funds for Mr Coles' American adventure.

Facebook group Blokes Advice also got on board with Mr Coles' fundraising efforts.

"I started a GoFundMe to go overseas 'cause I was struggling for a bit," Mr Coles said.

"I had the guys from Blokes Advice contact me and they've raised about $2000 to help me get over there."

Mr Coles has run the Coast competition since 2013 and said the aim was always to make it overseas.

"It's a four day event, so I'm really looking forward to it," he said.

"Ever since we started up the beard comp in 2013, my goal was actually to go to one of the championships.

"I've always wanted to go to America, especially Texas so it's excellent."

Tomorrow night, three judges will scrutinise the best facial hair the Coast has to offer across six categories - there's even a category for women with fake beards.

"We really try to involve everyone," Nathen said.

"It (the event) just keeps on growing - we started out with 200 and I think we had 300 last year as well.

"I'm hoping the local community will get behind us."

It's not just glory up for grabs, $8000 worth of prizes will be awarded including swag from local underwear brand Knobby.

To get in on the action, head along to the Palmwoods Hotel at 5pm this Saturday night.

Competition registration costs $5 and begins at 3pm, while spectator entry is free.
