Coast town's doctor headaches in for temporary relief?

THE band-aid solution to solve Kenilworth's GP headaches has been hatched, now it just needs approval to be applied.

Buderim's Suncoast Christian Health Centre has submitted a proposal to the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce offering to run a temporary surgery, starting with a few hours a week and increasing along with demand, starting in January 2017, in the existing Kenilworth Information Centre building.

The proposal is aimed at filling the gap until the new Medical Centre is opened, with an expression of interest process currently engaged in by the Sunshine Coast Council seeking Federal Government funding to help turn the Information Centre into the town's new medical centre.

It's proposed the Suncoast Christian Health Centre would stay on in the new medical centre once construction had been finished, Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce vice-president Dennis James told the Daily last week.

"The sooner we can get someone the better," Mr James said.

The council submitted its EOI after a resolution was made at the December ordinary meeting to seek the 50/50 funding from the Federal Government for construction of the new centre.

The terms of any lease with the GP in future would be sorted out between the GP, the council and the chamber of commerce which leases the building on a licence from the council at present.

The chamber of commerce unanimously agreed on December 17 to accept the offer made by Suncoast Christian Health Centre and absorb any incidental costs.

Mr James said the application was now being made with the council to obtain permission for the short-term medical practice to be established, and he was hopeful a determination would be made early in the New Year enabling the medical practice to be established.

If the funding application was successful for the new medical centre's construction a formal, impact-assessable material change of use planning application process would be carried out prior to construction.
